New Delhi, Jul 18 (UNI) Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and party General Secretary Amar Singh today called on Shahi Imam Syed Ahmad Bukhari in a bid to muster support for their stand on the nuclear deal, ahead of the crucial vote of trust on the issue in Parliament.
The meeting comes amid increasing tirade of BSP chief Mayawati against the ''anti-Muslim nature'' of the deal, which is being seen as an attempt to mobilise the community's opinion against the SP, her arch political rival in Uttar Pradesh.
Sources said the SP leaders discussed the current political situation with Mr Bukhari. In the 90-minute meeting, the Shahi Imam told them that all political parties should focus on socio-economic uplift of minorities, especially Muslims who were lagging far behind others.
Mr Bukhari lamented attempts to link the opposition to the nuclear deal to Muslims, saying that if the deal was for the good of the country, it was also good for the community and if it was going to harm the country, it would be opposed by all the countrymen irrespective of their caste, creed and religion.
The SP meeting with the Shahi Imam took place while the party MP Munawwar Husain was declaring his rebellion against the party for its support for the nuclear deal, saying that it was against the interest of the community as it was tilted in favour of the US.
