Shimla airport: World's one of the most dangerous airport
Shimla, Jul 17 (UNI) SFO Media, the largest independent travel blog publisher, has termed Shimla Airport in Himachal Pradesh as the one of the world's one of the most dangerous airports due to its location.
The airport, located at Jubberhatti, about 27 km from here, has no ground lighting facilities and is surrounded by mountains and treacherous weather conditions with heavy rains round the year.
It says if a plane were to skid or miss the runway, it would probably crash into the mountains.
The airport, which is 5,072 feet above sea level, was built by cutting the crest of a long hill in the region and receives regular domestic flights from Indian Airlines and Jagson Airlines, but no international flights operate from here.
The length of the runway, which is about 3,800 feet, only small aircrafts like 18-seat Dornier 228 can operate from Shimla Airport, while aircrafts such as AN-32s or larger jets can not land here as they require much longer runways.
