Indianapolis, US, Jul 17 (UNI) In their Olympic tuneup, the famed pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi received a major setback as the 'Indian Express' crashed out in the first round of doubles at Indianapolis Championships here.
The top seeded Indian pair was overpowered by the Canadian pair of Daniel Nestor and Frederic Niemeyer 4-6, 6-3, 10-12 yesterday.
The estranged pair had restarted its doubles campaign recently in a bid to bring a medal for the country at the Beijing Olympics and the duo started well as they finished runners-up in the Ordina Open.
The former world number one, Paes and Bhupathi, did not start well as their Canadian rivals took the lead in the very first set and were looking solid with their strategy.
The Indian pair was looking a little rusty and their old magic was certainly missing, however, the Paes-Bhupathi duo did manage to make a come back in the second set to equalise the scores.
But the Canadian pair showed some great skills to seal the third set which went to an exciting tie-breaker. The Indians found it hard to overcome the Canadian challenge in the third set.
Not only the Nestor-Niemeyer pair capitalised well on the opportunities that came their way, but they also made sure that the Indian pair was not given an opening which they kept searching for throughout the match.
Nestor, 35, and Niemeyer, 32, are also pairing up for this tournament to practise for the Beijing Games, where they'll represent Canada.
