Shillong, Jul 17 (UNI) The cumulative seasonal rainfall during this year's monsoons (from June 1 to July 15) has been six per cent above the long period average for the Northeastern region, sources at the Union Ministry of Earth Science said.

''The NE states have received good rainfall so far mainly due to shifting of the monsoon trough towards the foothills of the Himalayas,'' the sources said.

Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, the rainfall has been excess (actual rainfall more than long period average by 20 per cent or more) over 15 subdivisions, normal over seven subdivisions and deficient/scanty (actual rainfall less than long period average by 20 per cent or more) over 14 subdivisions in the country.

''As per the latest analysis, the monsoon trough at mean sea level continues to lie along the foothills of the Himalayas.

Numerical weather prediction models suggest that the monsoon trough, especially the eastern end, is likely to remain over the same region during next one week,'' the sources said.

The southwest monsoon had covered the entire country by July 10, about five days earlier than the normal date, the sources added.
