Chennai, July 17 (UNI) Fear stalks the people of Upmarket Vadapalani, West Mambalam and K K Nagar Areas of the city as yet another half-burnt body, with blood stains all over, was found near Ashok Pillar today leading to suspicion of a psycho-killer on the prowl.
The incident has sent shock waves among the locals as this was the fifth such incident in the last couple of weeks and third in the last six days.
The half-burnt body, with bleeding injuries in the head, was of Basha (50) who was working as a watchman in a real estate firm.
Police claimed it as an accidental death as the watchman was said to be under the influence of alcohol and the spark from the mosquito coil, he had lit before going to sleep, might have led to the fire.
Some liquor bottles and half burnt papers were recovered from the spot. The blood stains suggest the victim was fatally attacked before he was set ablaze.
The body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.
Incidentally, he was the third watchman to meet such a tragic fate in the streets coming under Vadapalani Area. The other victims of the psycho killer, who was suspected to be on the prowl, were a rag picker and a youth, whose half burnt body was recovered at Govindan Street in West Mambalam, about one km from Ashok Pillar, two days back.
What was more alarming was today's incident happened about 500 m away from the Ashok Nagar Police Station though the scene of crime technically came under the jursidiction of Kumaran Nagar Police Station.
The incident comes two days after Chennai City Police Commissioner R Sekar said these incidents posed a challenge to the police force and expressed confidence of solving the mystery.
