Chandigarh, Jul 16 (UNI) Punjab Information and Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia today handed over bank drafts of Rs 50,000 each to five women baseball players of the Indian National Team who will represent India in the Women World Baseball Championship to be held in Japan from August 24 to 29.
The five players-- Navdeep Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Kuljeet Kaur, Sukhjit Kaur and Daljit Kaur, who are part of the 18-member squad were thrilled when each of them was handed over the draft. The participation of the five players was in doubt after the selected players were informed by the members of Sports Council of India that Union Government would not be paying any money to enable them to participate in the World Cup and they would have to shell out Rs 50,000 each from their own pockets to go to Japan.
When the matter came to the notice of Mr Majithia, he got their problem solved through the Youth Akali Dal activists who collected Rs 2.5 lakh for the five players. Mr Majithia is the patron of the Youth Akali Dal.
All the five players belong to Guru Nanak Khalsa College for women, Ludhiana and have taken part in numerious national level baseball competitions.
