Girl commits suicide due to starvation
Jabalpur, July 16 (UNI) Unable to bear the pangs of starvation, an eleven-year-old girl has committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Hanumantal area in this district.
However, the administration has denied that starvation was behind her death.
Police said Sanjeeda hanged herself to death at her home yesterday. Her mother Parveen used to work as a maid at people's house to feed her three sons and a daughter. Her father had died five years back.
Congress councillor Azam Khan alleged that children had been starving as there was no food in the house since the past few days.
Ms Parveen had no money to purchase food.
Sub-Divisional Officer B P Dwivedi inquired about the matter from the family. He said prima facie it did not appear that starvation was behind the suicide.
Collector Hari Ranjan Rao the SDO and the tahsildar had been sent to the spot for preliminary investigation. Preliminary investigation suggested that the girl studied in a government school located in the colony and must have received mid-day meal. Exact cause can be known after inquiry is completed.
The girl's family has been provided financial assistance of Rs 5,000.
