Sambalpur, July 16 (UNI) Over 1000 Congress activists today courted arrest during the third phase of their 'jail bharo' movement in protest against failure of the BJD-BJP coalition government in Orissa on all fronts.
As a part of their agitational programme, Congress activists gheraoed the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Northern Division), broke the police barricade and courted arrest.
Heavy Police force was deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
A host of Congress leaders, including Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee President Jaydev Jena, former Chief Minister J B Patnaik, former Pradesh Congress president Sarat Patnaik, state youth Congress president Rohit Pujari, Deputy leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra and AICC leader K Suresh participated in the demonstration.
The leaders alleged that the BJD-BJP coalition government, headed by Naveen Patnaik, was unable to utilise the central funds but always blamed the UPA government at the Centre to mislead the people of the state.
Addressing a meeting leader of opposition J B Patnaik said during the last eight years rule of the BJD-BJD government, the law and order situation in the state was at its worst.
He also expressed concern over the faulty Public Distribution system.
PCC President Jayadev Jena dubbed the announcement of the Naveen Patnaik government to provide rice at Rs 2 kg to the BPL families as an election gimmick.
He said it was a well-orchestrated plan by the ruling party to recycle the subsidize rice and raise around Rs 200 crore out of it to spend in the coming elections.
PCC Secretary Nava Das said while there was a marked rise in per capita income of people in all parts of the country, Orissa continued to figure as the poorest state of the country due to the faulty policy of the Naveen Patnaik government.
