Mumbai, Jul 14 (UNI) Over 200 high school students from 55 countries will battle for honours in the 19th International Biology Olympiad (IOB) that commenced here today.

The week-long Olympiad will see the students compete in theoretical and practical tests designed by National Academic Committee in plant sciences, animal sciences, biochemistry, cellbiology, Genetics and Evolution, Ecology, Biosystematics and ethology. Over 200 team leaders and Scientific Observers will be supporting the participants and watching the event.

The event will be held at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) with Professor Anindya Sinha from National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, chairing the international jury sessions.

However, it will not be a case of all work and no play for the competitors, who will be taken on special tours to scientific centres across the city including the Nehru Science Centre and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

While Professor M Barma, Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research marked the beginning of the event by lighting the traditional lamp, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar will be the Chief Guest for the closing ceremony on July 19.
