Srinagar, Jul 13 (UNI) Paying rich tributes to the martyrs of 1931, CPI(M) state Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today said the day has to be commemorated as the struggle of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for upholding the values of democracy, social justice and human values.
He said the struggle ultimately fructified and helped the suppressed people of the state to live with dignity, self respect and honour.
In a statement issued Mr Tarigami said the supreme sacrifices by the martyrs led to the dawning of a new era in the state.
The uprising against the tyranny and autocratic rule of Maharaja by the people laid a strong edifice for unifying the people, rising above narrow considerations that finally culminated in initiating a process of their empowerment, he added.
Mr Tarigami said people, especially civil society and political forces, would will have to work unitedly to maintain the unity and integrity of the state and not allow the divisive forces to succeed in dividing it on regional or communal lines.
He said the recent events were a reminder and a strong message for political leadership that people could not be taken for granted.
Gone are the days when people could be befooled by irresponsible slogan mongering, the CPI(M) leader added.
He appealed to the people to be vigilant against those elements who tried to channelise the discontent among the masses on sectarian and communal lines.
