Onus on MCI to create awareness on good health: Governor
Chennai, Jul 12 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala today said the Medical Council of India (MCI) should chalk out plans to organise medical and awareness camps to make people aware about maintaining good health.
Inaugurating the GECON 2008 and launch of medical equipment capsule endoscopy of MedIndia hospital here, he said the MCI should organise camps, in coordination with non-voluntary organisations and the government to create awareness among people.
The governor said diet played an important role in maintenance of good health and people should be educated on healthy food habits, exercise, hygiene and sanitation.
Citing statistics, the Governor said about 12 per cent of males and 16 per cent of females in the country were obese. In Tamil Nadu, 19.8 males and 24.4 per cent females were obese.
Life style pattern, diet modifications and work related stress led to diseases like diabetes, hypertension and obesity, the Governor said.
