New Delhi, Jul 12 (UNI) Terming the July 10 CBI affidavit against her in the disproportionate assets case ''political vendetta'', Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today said the Congress and Samajwadi Party were out to ''finish'' her.
Accusing the CBI of submitting the recent affidavit in the Supreme Court at the behest of the Samajwadi Party, Ms Mayawati addressing the media here alleged the SP in collusion with the Congress was part of a conspiracy to finish her off.
''The recent case has been lodged at the behest of the Samajwadi Party, which put conditions while offering support to the Congress on the nuclear deal, and this harrassment by the CBI was a part of the 'deal' between the two parties.'' Stating that the SP wanted to put its ''own man'' at the helm of the CBI, as part of the 'deal' to save the Congress on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the BSP chief said both the Congress and the SP were responsible for the decadence in the central agency which now had become a stooge of the ruling party.
Questioning CBI's silence on the DA case against Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family, despite the fact that the investigation report was lying with it for the past one year, Ms Mayawati said why had it not leaked its details to the media as it has done in her case.
''Why had the central agency also declined to accept cases for investigation, sent by her government, in which several big leaders of the Samajwadi Party were involved? This was because the Congress had been wooing the SP all along.'' All these indicate that behind the scene political games were being played ''to finish me off and my party'', as the Congress, SP and other parties see us as a threat to their dominance, she added.
There were even reports that since the joining of hands by the Congress and SP, senior bureaucratic officials of the government were visiting the SP office to seek directions on several matters, she told the media and added, ''the present case also falls under the same category.'' Stating that the entire episode against her smacked of vendetta and was part of an unholy conspiracy to finish her off politically, Ms Mayawati said, ''Whenever elections are round the corner, the CBI is used by the ruling party to rake up some issue against my party and harm its prospects.'' Stressing that there was no legality on what the CBI was doing now as it neither had the sanction from the Supreme Court nor permission from from the state government to proceed against her on the issue, she said leaking unsubstantiated details to the press was tantamount to ''trial by media''.
Alleging that the media was being fed with false details that gave her party a bad name and created misgivings against her, she said all this was part of a well orchestrated conspiracy to malign her and tarnish her image among the people and finish her political career.
''It is surprising that the CBI lodges the affidavit in the Supreme Court on July 10, despite having completed investigations into the case in January 2007. That too, soon after my party withdrew support from the UPA government on June 21 and the Central government was to seek a vote of confidence on July 21,'' she said.
Wanting to know the ''real motive'' of the central agency in lodging a case against her on July 10, when the court had set July 28 as the date of hearing, the BSP leader said this was noteworthy as the case had been lying with the CBI for the last five years.
