Khade finishes 5th in 50m freestyle World Junior Championship

Monterrey, Mexico, Jul 12 (UNI) India's rising hope for the Beijing Olympics Virdhawal Khade failed to surpass his national record breaking semi-final timing as he finished fifth in the 50m freestyle event of the second FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.

Khade, who clocked 22.69s in the semi-final to see himself qualify second for the event yesterday, finished with a timing of 22.95s in the finals.

The 17-year-old Khade, however, earned 13 points with the day's effort.

The Kohlapur lad will now particpate in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly races.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's Orinico Faamausili broke the championship record of 22.66s, clocking 22.37s to win the gold medal.

The silver went to Italian Luca Dotto, who also broke the championship record with a timinig of 22.63s.

Oleg Tikhobaev of Italy clocked 22.73s to clinch the bronze medal.
