Andaman selects 31 students under SAI-SAG project

Port Blair, Jul 12 (UNI) The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has selected 31 students from different areas for admission in the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Special Area Games project for 2008-2009.

''This was done as part of our efforts towards nurturing sports talents from rural areas where they hardly get exposure in national and international level sports,'' Director of the Department of Sports, Art and Culture Lucas Robert said here today.

The selected students will undergo training in disciplines like swimming, kayaking, canoeing and football at the SAI SAG (Sports Authority of India, Special Area Games) centre at the historic Netaji Stadium of Port Blair.

The Director said most of the sportspersons (students) hail from rural areas like remote North and Middle Andaman are the students of standard VI to IX.

According to Andaman Administration, the students selected during their stay in SAI Hostel of Port Blair will be provided with facilities, including free boarding and lodging, education, medical facilities and insurance, sports kit and competition exposure as and when required.

The sportspersons selected through Special Area Game (SAG) project have won many medals in the national and international sports events and brought laurels to these Islands.
