Under-19 Jr state championship given FIDE rating

Chennai, July 11 (UNI) About 100 boys and 50 girls will be vying for honours in the 37th SRM Tamil Nadu State Junior Under-19 FIDE Rated Chess Championship to be held here from July 15 to 21.

The tournament, carrying a prize money of Rs 40,000, and being organised as a FIDE rated event, would be held at ''Hall of Performing Arts'', SRM University at suburban Kattankulathur, University Director (Sports) Prof R Venkataramani and Organising Secretary V Ravichandran told reporters here today.

They said the top 12 players in both the sections would be given prizes. The top four players in the boys and girls sections from this event would represent the state in the national junior event to be held later this year.

''Players who compete in this tournament will get FIDE ratings.

This will be a major attraction of this tournament. For the first time we have made it as a rating tournament as players would get ELO points'', All India Chess Federation Secretary D V Sundar, who was also present, said.

The tournament would be played under 11-round Swiss format and would help rated players to increase their ratings from this event.

International Arbiter M Vijayakumar would be the Chief Arbiter of the event, to be inaugurated by University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu.
