Villupuram, July 10 (UNI) Supporters of Union Minister G K Vasan continued their protest against the appointment of Mr K V Thankgabalu as TNCC President, even as the latter assured Congress High Command tht he would end the factional fueds in the state unit.
After the partymen at Omalur in Salem district staged a hunger strike and hoisted the flag of now defunct Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) two days ago, supporters of Mr Vasan staged a similar protest in Villupuram district today.
The protest, held at Thirukoilur, the native place of Mr S Sivaraj, a Congress MLA, who is also Villupuram south district secretary, comes on a day when Mr Thankgabalu called on party President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and outlined the steps he proposed to take to strengthen the party, ending factionalism.
After hoisting the TMC flag in front of the party office at Kallakuruchi, local councillor Mohan, who led the agitation said that they have re-launched TMC at Thirukoilur.
He said Mr Thankgabalu had no locus standi to lead the party in the state.
At Ulunthurpet and Sankarapuram also, supporters of Mr Vasan, lowered the Congress flags and hoisted TMC flags, reports recieved here said.
The factional fued was in sharp contrast to Mr Thankgabalu's claim that there were no rpt no factions in the party and he enjoyed the support of all frontline leaders, including Mr Vasan.
