London, July 10 : The man who took the lid off Max Mosley "orgy" has insisted that a video showing the Formula 1 chief being whipped had an "absolutely overwhelming Nazi theme".

Neville Thurlbeck, who asked a dominatrix to film the S and M (sadomasochism) party, told the High Court he thought he would see "just some sort of watered-down comedy version of 'Allo 'Allo".

But Thurlbeck, the News of the World's chief reporter, said: "When we looked at the video it became clear very quickly that there was a very cynical Nazi theme running throughout. It was just clear to us all.

"I was completely surprised by the level of the Nazism as we saw it. I didn't quite expect the degree of Nazi-style humiliation," The Sun quoted Thurlbeck, as saying.

The newspaper's editor Colin Myler told the court the "brutal" orgy at a flat in Chelsea, West London, also had a "potential criminal flavour".

Told by Mosley's QC James Price that beatings were to be expected at an S and M session, Myler replied: "You say it was S and M but blood was drawn.

"I know it was drawn because he had a plaster on his bottom. I think it was after he'd had 15 beatings of the cane."

Myler said he believed the story was of "legitimate public interest". And it was "absolutely not true" that the paper fabricated the Nazi element of the story.

Mosley, the 68-year-old son of the 1930s Fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley, is claiming breach of privacy at the landmark London hearing.

He is seeking punitive damages, claiming his life was devastated by the expose in March of what the paper called a "sick Nazi orgy with five hookers".
