Hyderabd, July 9 (UNI) Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Wakf K Rahman Khan today said the committee had instructed the Andhra Pradesh Government to reconstitute the Wakf Board for its effective functioning.

Addressing a press conference after meeting the state government officials and wakf officials here, he said the State Wakf Board was not reconstituted for the last four years.

He said the State Chief Secretary had assured the committee that measures would be taken to reconstitute the board. If the government failed to comply with the instructions of the committee, it would be a violation of the Act on Wakf.

Stating that a full-fledged board was very essential to look into the disputes on the wakf and its properties, Mr Khan, who is also the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, said it was the responsibility of the State Government and the Wakf Board to protect the wakf properties.

The Committee, which visited various places in the state, had inspected the wakf properties and held discussions with the district officials on the disputes and advised them to protect the properties.

Stating that the committee had already visited several states to look into the functioning of the wakf boards there, he said the committee would submit a report to the government on the extent of lands and properties of wakf before December this year after compiling the reports from each state.

He said there was 1.45 lakh acres of wakf land in the state and of this, nearly 80,951 acres was encroached upon by individuals.

He said the state government had allocated 829 acres out of 1,600 acres of wakf lands to the private industrialists in Manikonda area in Ranga Reddy district. There was a dispute between the Revenue Department and the Wakf Board as the government claimed that the land belonged to it. However, it was not the government land and was a Wakf Board property, he claimed.

Mr Khan advised the Wakf officials and the Revenue officials to settle the matter amicably and the Chief Secretary had stated that there was a mechanism to settle the lands between the two institutions.
