Dehra Dun, July 8 (UNI) Buoyed by the rising influx of the Dak Kanwarias, the Uttarakhand and UP police have decided to ban them ahead of the Kanwar Mela this year.
Over lakhs of Shiva worshippers walk on foot through the roads in Uttarakhand each year to collect Kanwar (water from the Holy Ganga) in Haridwar with about half making the trip on wheels.
''The Dak Kanwarias often drive recklessly at uncontrolled speeds with loud music causing trouble to the Kanwaria's on foot '', IG Garhwal Ashok Kumar told UNI today. He said an awareness campaign was being mooted along with the UP Police to raise awareness on the need for conducting a peaceful mela by ensuring a ban on Dak Kanwarias indulging in rowdiness.
The annual congregation draws lakhs of pilgrims every during Sawaan (monsoon months of July-August) from the northern states of UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Bihar.
Though the common ritual is to carry the holy Ganga water by foot, most prefer to make the trip in cars , jeeps, trucks, and even pick-up vans.
