Two killed as police open fire to quell clashing groups
Ahmedabad, Jul 8 (UNI) At least two villagers were killed and 25 others injured when police opened fire to quell two clashing groups at Dhedhal village in Bavla taluka of Ahmedabad district today.
According to police, the trouble broke out over a petty issue of getting a seat in a three-wheeler between people of Bharvads and patel communities and this snowballed into clashes between the two groups this afternoon.
Soon, over 1,000 members of both communites gathered and attacked each other with sharp weapons and also indulged in firing.
According to preliminary reports, at least five rounds of private firing was reported during the clashes.
However, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd after firing 20 rounds, in which two villagers died on the spot, while 25 other sustained injuries.
The injured were rushed to the V S Hospital in Ahmedabad.
The situation is under control with police instensifying their patrolling. Police have also rounded up several villagers as a precautionary measure.
A case of rioting has been registered and further investigations are on.
