Mizoram sees upsurge in minor rape cases, other crimes
Aizawl, Jul 8 (UNI) Mizoram has registered almost 25 per cent increase in rape cases, with most of them being crimes against minors, Mizoram Deputy IGP L S Sailo said here today.
Addressing a press conference, he said, ''40 cases of rape have been registered during January to June this year, compared to 32 during the same period last year.'' He added that 14 of the 44 rape cases were against girls below ten years age while 11 of the rape victims belonged to 10-14 age group.
On the whole, Mizoram had witnessed a 5.26 per cent rise in violent crimes, including murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, abduction, dacoity, robbery, rioting and arson, besides rape.
''There is a 90 percent upsurge in extortion, 200 per cent increase in misappropriation, 133 per cent rise in forgery and 100 per cent increase in motor accidents (non-fatal) and 21 per cent rise in motor accidents (fatal),'' the IGP said.
While IPC cases saw a 2.73 per cent increase, non-IPC cases increased by 4.79 per cent, making it an overall increase by 3.31 per cent, police sources said.
