PMK activists torch bus in Tamil Nadu

Tirupur (Tamil Nadu), Jul 7: A State Transport Corporation bus was torched here in the early hours even as Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) called for a bandh today against the discharge of effluents into rivers by dyeing units located here.

Police said six PMK followers were arrested in connection with the incident which took place at the old bus stand here. However, the driver and conductor, who were sleeping in the bus which had come here from Madurai, escaped unhurt.

The bus was gutted before the Fire and Rescue Services Personnel could reach the spot, police added.

The PMK gave the bandh call in protest against the dyeing units which discharging effluents into rivers, making them unfit for irrigation of lands.

However, normal life was not affected. Except for a few hosiery and dyeing units, most of them were working as usual. Buses and autos were also plying normally.
