Bangalore, July 6 (UNI) Renowned economist and University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat was conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Gulbarga University here today.
Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur, who is also the Gulbarga University Chancellor, presented the Doctorate to Prof Thorat at Raj Bhavan in a simple ceremony.
Speaking after awarding the Doctorate, Mr Thakur opined that eminent academicians and scholars need to be honoured, considering their service to the cause of higher education.
Stating that the universities have an important role to play in transforming India into a vibrant and knowledge-based society, the Governor expressed confidence that the higher education institutions would emerge as centres for value addition and dissemination of knowledge by imparting quality education.
Speaking after receiving the Doctorate, Prof Thorat said the Centre was providing a lot of financial support to universities through the UGC. ''You will have to make use of the fund released by the UGC as higher education will remain to be a main focus area for development,'' he added.
