Vanniyar Sangam President and PMK Treasurer Guru held
Jayankondam, Tamil Nadu, Jul 5 (UNI) Two weeks after snapping ties with its nagging ally PMK, the DMK government today arrested senior PMK leader and Vanniyar Sangam President ''Kaduvetti'' J Guru early today.
Guru, a former MLA and PMK Treasurer, was arrested at his residence in Kaduvetti village coming Meensuritti police station limits in Ariyalur district on charges of holding out a murder threat to AIADMK leader Gunasekaran recently.
The arrest of Guru appeared imminent ever since the PMK was shown the door following his derogatory remarks against the DMK during the PMK's General Council meeting in January.
He had also allegedly threatened to behead senior DMK leaders, including Union Minister A Raja and local functionaries.
Though police had been maintaining that Guru would not be arrested as there was no complaint against him, he was held at 0450 hrs this morning after police registered an attempt to murder case on Gunasekaran's complaint.
The arrest seems to have worsened the prospects of PMK being part of the DPA, at least indirectly, in the company of Congress, a point being harped on by the PMK leadership.
Taking serious view of his remarks and senior DMK Ministers appealing to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Party Patriarch M Karunanidhi to decide on continuance of the alliance, the DMK's high-level committee met on June 17 and decided to snap ties with the PMK on the ground that it could not tolerate insults heaped on it.
