Thane, Jul 5 (UNI) Thane-based, Nikita Thakkar, who has gained international recognition for her excellence in fashion fraternity, now plans to participate for the Lakme Fashion week.
Being born in a family originated from Kutch district of Gujarat, it was not easy to acquire the recognition, Ms Nikita said while talking to mediapersons here today.
''Initially the people from our community, were not in favour of encouraging children to pursue their career and instead got them married at an early age. But my parents, Mr Maganbhai and Ms Meena, always insisted on my studying and making a mark in terms of academics. My father, a businessman, wished that at least one of his four children should have a specialised degree recognised internationally and I am the lucky one to be chosen who could acquire the same,'' Ms Nikita proudly said.
A Commerce graduate, Ms Nikita, completed her fashion designing course from IITC, Mumbai. She also participated in fashion shows and exhibitions during her college days and thereafter launch the brand, 'Gulmohar', a showroom in Mumbai. Later, when she felt that the store could be handled without her presence here, she headed to London to secure the degree of MBA. She often travelled to visit her store. She worked with a few abroad-based fashion companies, when she was once asked to organise a five-day show, which she did. In this show, she presented a few of her designs with different models of different origins. It received a overwhelming response.
Later, she organised several such shows in Dubai, the US and Bangalore.
Apart from fashion designing, Ms Nikita is also a trained classical dancer.
When asked for the reason she opted to take fashion designing as her career and not as a dancer, Ms Nikita said, ''Since I was a child, I was fond of wearing very stylish clothes and designer brands, which was appreciated by all with the 'mix and match' techniques I used along with accessories. I love dance but fashion is career.'' UNI XR GR SBC AS1407
