Farmers resort to road roko demanding MSP for tomato
Kolar, Jul 5 (UNI) For the last ten days, traffic at National Highways between Kolar-Bangalore and Kolar-Tirupathi had been paralaysed with passengers being stranded for long hours as the farmers were resorting to road roko demanding Minimum Support Price(MSP) for tomato The official sources said there had been a drastic fall in the prices of tomatoes because of the glut. The irate farmers gave vent to their frustration by throwing the tomatoes on roads and in the drainage for the last ten days in the district.
The farmers were demanding the government to announce a minimum Rs five per kg as MSP. However, the government had announced 30 paise, which was prevailing during the Governor's rule and had not provided any relief.
The agitators blocked NH4 by throwing tomatoes on the road near N-Vadderahalli in Mulbagal Taluk yesterday, alleging government's apathy towards their plight.
The farmers said they will continue their struggle till their demand was met.
The Chairman of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board Varthur Prakash said the government was committed to fix the MSP of tomato at Rs two per kg.
