Satna, MP, July 4 (UNI) Heavy police deployment was made today in Rampurbaghelan town in this district of Madhya Pradesh due to tension prevailing after a jeweller immolated himself during Bharat bandh yesterday.
Amid tight security and in the presence of senior civil and police officials, the last rites of Hiralal Soni(28) were performed around noon though earlier his relatives refused to accept the body demanding action against those who had assaulted him.
On the assurance of senior officials including Superintendent of Police K S Rathore that a case would be registered against the attackers, his relatives later relented.
Hiralal Soni immolated himself in front of his shop-cum- residence yesterday after he was beaten up and humiliated by BJP and Bajrang Dal workers. He later died in a hospital here.
His brother Narendra Soni said the altercation took place as there was a common entrance for the shop and residence.
''While Hiralal was being assaulted, the bandh supporters thrashed our 7-year-old niece and our aged mother, who tried to intervene, was also roughed up'', Mr Narendra told reporters.
''The post-mortem was performed at 0500 hours without informing the family and the body was brought to Rampur this morning'', Mr Narendra added.
District Magistrate Vijay Anand Kureel, Inspector General of Police A K Soni and political leaders were present during the funeral.
Though the Soni community members had given a call for bandh, there was lukewarm response to it today due to heightened police presence.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the bereaved family, sources added.
