Chennai, Jul 4 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today asserted that the ''controversial'' Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) would be implemented, though some forces were trying to scuttle the project.
Speaking at Union Minister T R Baalu's family marriage function here, he said though the scheme faced some failures and obstacles in the middle, it would win ultimately.
Mr Karunanidhi said it was unfortunate that those who had campaigned for the project and resolved to implement it in the past, have turned against it and put stumbling blocks for the same.
Pointing out that the project was welcomed and accepted by the then Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, he said ''we are only keen to implement the project, accepted by people like Mr Vajpayee''.
Showering praise on Mr Baalu for being a successful Union Minister, he said Mr Baalu, who hailed from a middle class family in Thanjavur rose to become a Union Minister, thanks to his hard work.
Like Mr Baalu had succeeded, the Sethu project, implemented by him would also succeed, he said adding he was sure Mr Baalu would accomplish the task of implementing the project, come what may.
He said people, who had vouched for the implementation of the project in their election manifestos, were opposing the project because they do not want Mr Baalu to take the credit for implementing the mega project.
The DMK leader said he was, however, sure that the project would be implemented, fulfilling the dreams of late Chief Ministers C N Annadurai and K Kamaraj.
