BFI to rope in foreign coach for juniors

New Delhi, Jul 4 (UNI) In an attempt to relocate Indian Basketball on the international map, the BFI today revealed that it will soon rope in a foreign coach to train the juniors.

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI), which already has a foreign coach in Serbian Alexander Bucan for the seniors, made a request to FIBA and both the president and secretary-general of the world body, Bob Elphenstan and Patrick Bauman, who are here for the 'Basketball Without Borders Asia' have promised the governing body in India to lend its support.

The BFI president RS Gill said, ''FIBA has already promised us about a foreign coach for our junior team.'' He also said he has put in a request to FIBA Asia secretary-general to send other national sides from the region that are at par with the India.

Gill added that the FIBA Asia official has agreed to organise teams like Taiwan, Qatar and Iran for an international meet in the country.

''But winning a match here or a medal there is not going to help us. We have to be consistent with our performance,'' Gill added.

Gill also pointed out that programmes such as Basketball Without Borders, the first in India, always helped the youngsters pick up some vital strategies and world class techniques.
