Accused in death case shifted to Mangalore jail

Udupi, Jul 4 (UNI) The JMF Court today ordered shifting of Athul Rao, the main accused in the Padmapriya (wife of Udupi BJP MLA K Raghupathy Bhat) death case, to District Central Jail in Mangalore from Udupi Sub Jail here.

The Judge ordered that Mr Rao, who had been remanded to judicial custody till July nine, should be shifted and allowed to be admitted to any hospital of his choice for his asthma treatment at his own expense.

After hearing the arguments from both sides on the petition filed by Mr Rao's wife Meera on July One, praying the court to shift her husband to any other jail outside the district, following threat to his life in the Udupi Sub Jail, where he had been lodged since June 30, the Judge A M Ramachandraiah ordered that Mr Rao should be immediately shifted to Mangalore district jail.

In her petition, Ms Rao also prayed that her husband should also be allowed to undergo treatment in any hospital of his choice, as he was an asthma patient. The senior official of the Sub Jail here in his report submitted to the Court here on July two, that for security reasons, Mr Rao should be shifted to Mangalore district jail.

Mr Rao was arrested by Manipal police on June 23 in Mangalore on the charges of kidnapping and abetment to suicide in the Padmapriya death case, who was found hanging from the ceiling in a flat in Delhi. He was remanded to six-day police custody by the JMF Court here, ordering the investigation officer to produce him on June 30.

The Investigation Officer after completing his investigation by taking Mr Rao to Kumta, Goa and Delhi produced him before the Judge at his residence on June 29.
