New Delhi, Jul 3 (UNI) The Centre today decided to provide a second helicopter to the Lakshadweep Administration for five years for maintenance of law and order and inter-island services.
The helicopter, provided by Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited on lease, will be subsidised by the Union Home Ministry to the tune of Rs 13.1 crore per annum, Broadcasting and Information Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said after the Union Cabinet meeting that took the decision.
''The helicopter will be stationed at the Island's capital Kavarati. It will be used for providing connectivity for the Administration's emergency requirements, including maintenance of law and order and inter-island services during the monsoon when there is no other mode of transport,'' Mr Dasmunsi said.
Pawan Hans has been providing helicopter service to the Lakshadweep Administration with only one helicopter on lease since February 1, 1987.
