'Bandh' evokes mixed response in Gujarat
Ahmedabad, Jul 3 (UNI) The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-called nationwide ''bandh'' to protest against the withdrawal of land to the Shiri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), received mixed response in the state.
Major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Gandhinagar were almost unaffected by the ''bandh''.
However, in some parts of Saurashtra, the ''bandh'' evoked good response. The VHP workers were seen moving around in different parts of the state since morning, urging shopkeepers to join the ''bandh'' and down their shutters.
Schools and colleges were remained closed in many places. Reports of police resorting to mild lathicharge came in from some parts.
Police also detained VHP and Bajrang Dal workers.
The Gujarat BJP kept away from the ''bandh'' in view of the traditional ''Rath Yatra'' tomorrow.
Gujarat BJP spokesman Vijay Rupani yesterday had clarified that the party would not be able to participate in the ''bandh'' since around 150 ''rath yatras'' will be taken out in the state on Friday and this would overburden the security machinery. The decision was taken after consultation with the Central party leadership, he said.
