Andaman sets up Rural Knowledge Centres for farmers

Port Blair, Jul 03 (UNI) The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have set up ten Rural Knowledge Centres (RKCs) in different parts of the islands for farmers.

The scheme envisages dissemination of agriculture-related information to the farmers and others in the rural pockets of the islands.

The Rural Knowledge Centres are presently functioning from the sub-depots of the agriculture department. Efforts are on to construct new buildings for the purpose, Director of Andaman's Agriculture department M A Salam told UNI today.

According to the Director, Andaman PWD has been entrusted with the construction of buildings for Rural Knowledge Centres in South Andaman and Southern group of islands, while Andaman Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIIDCO) is to construct such buildings in North&Middle Andaman District.

Ten Rural Knowledge Centres have been set up at Chouldari, Nimbudera, Urmila Pur, Nabogram and R K Pur besides, Terresa, Kachal, Kamorta, Campbell Bay and Car Nicobar islands. These RKCs have facilities like phone, television and computer, the Director added.
