NMPT achieves 100 pc growth in container traffic in Q1
Mangalore, July 2 (UNI) The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has achieved 100 per cent growth in container traffic during the first quarter of the current fiscal, NMPT Chairman Tamilvanan said today.
In a press release here, he said that for the first quarter of the Financial Year 2008-09, Port handled 7559 TEUs as against 3713 TEUs handled for the same period of last year, thus achieving 103 per cent growth. He attributed the reasons for the increase to the infrastructure addition like adding of Two Container Handling Reach Stackers, increase in stack yard capacity, increase in reefer plug points, efficient handling by the Port workers and better planning by the Port Officers and staff.
He said that the increase in arrival of Mainline Vessels from East and West African Countries to Mangalore Port with raw cashew containers, which were earlier trans shipped mostly at Colombo Port, is a boon to the trade. He expressed happiness over the marketing efforts taken by the Port in highlighting the facilities available in NMPT and also the supportive role played by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce&Industries (KCCI) and Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce&Industries (FKCCI).
