Visakhapatnam, Jul 2: The banned CPI Maoists observed Bharat- bandh in protest against the 'suppression and elimination' programme and price hike of essential commodities, due to the Government following the World Bank-directed economic policies.
According to a release here, steps taken by the Centre and State Governments against the party by employing new methods and sophisticated weapons will not mount pressure on it.
The police officials had conducted a meeting in the North coastal region, besides Visakhapatnam city, and were keeping a tight vigil in the railway and bus stations and other important areas. High alert had been sounded in the agency areas, while night patrolling and checking of vehicles were being carried out in the hilltop areas.
Security for the VVIPS would be strenghtened, in wake of the Maoist attack on the greyhounds personnel four days ago at Balimela reservoir on the Orissa Andhra border.
The police called upon the underground Maoists cadre to join the mainstream and rehabilitation measures, and informed that lifting of the pending cases would be taken up as per the law, the release added.
Meanwhile, the body of another greyhound commando, found on the shore of Sarakumbanda Village near a hillock next to Balimela reservoir, was airlifted to a hospital here today.
The body was identified as Ch Subba Rao (20) of Eluru, police said.
The search operations for the 33 missing greyhound commandos continued in full swing under the supervision of greyhounds IG Rajiv Trivedi. The launch would be lifted out by the Naval divers today or tomorrow, police added.
