Imphal, Jun 28 (UNI) The United Clubs Organisation (UCO) has urged Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh to implement recommendations of Sachar Committee, constituted by the Prime Minister.
UCO president Malik said recruitment drive for college lecturers in Manipur was on and the DPC for 172 regular post in 23 faculties/subjects was being conducted by the Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC).
''Recently, the UGC, on the basis of Sachar Committee recommendations, had instructed all the universities in the country to increase the number of Muslim teachers situated in the Muslim concentrated areas so that the alarmingly low representation of students from the community in higher education could be improved,'' Mr Malik said.
''Not only the enrolment of Muslim students but also the number of Muslim teachers in the colleges in Manipur is alarmingly low. It has been found that out of the total 1,787 lecturers in the 32 government colleges in Manipur, there are only 40 Muslim lecturers out of which two are women,'' he added.
''The percentage of representation of Muslims comes to 2.24 per cent and 0.1 per cent for males and females respectively whereas there is eight per cent Muslim population in the state,'' he said.
He appealed to the Chief Minister to consider the plight of the Muslim communities and implement the Sachar Committee recommendations.
