Kuala Lumpur, June 28 : Kedah Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Youth chief R. Nantha Kumar and several of the state's movement leaders have resigned en bloc from their posts in protest against S. Samy Vellu's leadership as party president.

They have also protested against Vellu's call for MIC Youth chief S. Vigneswaran to resign from his post as he had passed the age of 41.

According to the New Strait Times, Nantha Kumar, who had been state MIC Youth chief for the past eight years, called on Samy Vellu to step down and give way to a new party leadership.

Making clear that he was prepared to face the consequences as he no longer had faith in Vellu's leadership, Nantha Kumar said: "I would rather be labelled a traitor to the current president than deemed a traitor to the party and the Indian community."

Kedah MIC Youth secretary T.M. Ganeson and information chief S. Somasunther also relinquished their posts. State Youth treasurer M. Selvan, was also quitting his post.

The MIC Youth has been rattled after its secretary-general, Dr. S. Subramaniam, announced on June 19 that Vigneswaran and several other leaders would have to vacate their posts with immediate effect, as they had passed the 41-year age limit as stipulated in the MIC constitution.
