Ahmedabad, Jun 28: Obesity, a result of fats that exceed the body's skeletal and physical standards, is the next alarming disease, as available data shows that more people are dying due to obesity.
Dr Mahendra Narwaria, Chairman of the All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity (Gujarat Chapter) said an increase of 20 per cent or more above the ideal body weight is the point at which excess weight becomes a health risk. Due to this form of obesity, there is an increased risk of death from diabetes or heart attack.
He said in order to create awareness about the disease among the masses, we have arranged for a two-day conference ''Obesity 2008'' of physicians in the city from, tomorrow.
Live surgical procedures on Obesity, during the conference will give the participants a first hand experience about the in-depth technical information regarding the different procedures. The conference will include elaborate sessions on causes of obesity and experts will share their experiences on the type of surgery recommended.
During the two-day session, a support group for obesity and diabetes will be launched, where patients who have undergone the surgery will primarily discuss their problems before surgery.
The group will meet once in a month and organise awareness programmes for schools and colleges, which can help restrict these diseases at an early age, he added.
