Serena Williams raced into the fourth round after demolishing France's Amelie Mauresmo 7-6 (7/5) 6-1. It was the 10th time in 12 meetings Williams had triumphed over Mauresmo, who was troubled by a thigh injury which required treatment midway through the second set. Williams now plays fellow-American Bethanie Mattek in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was a straight sets victor over Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic today. And there were also straight sets victories today for eighth seed Anna Chakvetadze and eighteenth seed Nicole Vaidisova. Lleyton Hewitt lined up a clash with five-time champion Roger Federer in the men's last 16 after disposing of Italian Simone Bolelli 6-1 6-3 7-6. Hewitt, the only man other than Federer in the men's draw to have won the tournament, will now take on the Swiss number one in a mouth-watering clash.
Federer himself was a straight sets victor this afternoon - Frenchman Marc Gicquel on a rain-affected day five at SW19.
Eleventh seed Tomas Berdych is out however, beaten in straight sets by Spain's Fernando Verdasco.
