Panaji, Jun 27 (UNI) The police today imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC in and around the commercial city of Margao in South Goa following communal tension as a sequel to an eve-teasing incident.
With the incident in Rumdamol panchayat, east of Margao, taking a communal turn and Bajrang Dal activists forcing the shopkeepers to shut down the establishments, police resorted to lathi-charge, injuring four persons, including some journalists.
Some shops and houses on either side were destroyed by mobs even as the main market in Margao was forcibly closed.
The authorities have clamped the prohibitory orders till 1800 hrs tomorrow as a precautionary measure and are making efforts to apprehend the miscreants, district collector G P Naik told UNI.
Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar said the situation was now under control though tense.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, who represents Margao constituency, directed the chief secretary to deploy additional forces if necessary to maintain law and order.
He has also directed the police authorities to deal sternly with the miscreants and restore peace and tranquility.
