Non-Marathi corporators unhappy over Marathi imposition
Mumbai, June 27 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s decision to adopt Marathi as the official language in the civic body has left the non-Marathi speaking corporators unhappy.
The BMC has adopted Marathi as the official language with effect from June 25.
Reacting to the decision, NCP corporator Kaptan Malik said use of Marathi is welcome, but, then, it should not be the only language in use in the civic body.
Congress corporator Alice Johnson Therattil said the non-Marathi corporators would find it difficult to follow the proceedings in the House.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena vice president Haji Arafat Shaikh has welcomed the decision saying the BMC move was in accordance to his party's wishes. The MNS, he said, is also demanding that the vehicles in the state should display the registration numbers in Marathi.
