Guwahati, Jun 27 (UNI) The Assam unit of the United Women Front (UWF), the country's first national all women political party, today stressed the need for more involvement of women in political arena for sustained and uniform growth of the country.
''Women must play a bigger role in the political field as they form 50 per cent of our society,'' UWF Assam unit president Jhula Sharma said here.
Pointing that the Women's Reservation Bill had failed to get Parliament nod despite vocal support to it by all parties before any election, Ms Sharma emphasised on under-representation of women in the political field.
Registered with the Election Commission of India last year, the UWF had formed district committees in 12 districts of Assam so far, the state president added.
Elaborating on the UWF's decision to field only women candidates during elections, Ms Sharma said the party would also support male candidates when necessary.
The UWF is a party by the women, of the women but for everyone in the country, she added.
