Sikh pugilist prevented from participating in nationals

Patiala, Jun 25 (UNI) Citing the rules of International Amateur Boxing Federation (AIBA), Maharashtra Boxing Association had allegedly tried to prevent a Sikh pugilist from participating in 41st Junior National Boxing Championship held in Nagpur for having beard and moustache.

Speaking in a press conference here today, Punjab Boxing Association general secretary Jaipal Singh, who was accompanied by SAD's general secretary Harmel Singh Tohra, alleged that Punjab's Pushpinder Pal Singh was prevented from participating in the championship held from June 17 to 22 for having moustache and beard.

Puspinder Pal, who was also present in the conference said the host state Maharashtra told him that he could not participate in the event as according to International Amateur Boxing Federation (AIBA) rules person having moustache and beard can not participate in a boxing championship.

However, when Pushpinder brought this matter to the notice of Punjab Boxing Association president Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Indian Boxing Association president Abey Chutala, the matter was resolved and he was allowed to participate in the Champioship in which he won the gold medal.

Mr Jaipal and Mr Tohra said that the action of Maharashtra Boxing Association was condemnable and they would bring this matter before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sports Minister M S Gill.
