Kannada may get classical language status
Mysore, Jun 25 (UNI) Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) Director Udya Narayan Singh today said a final meeting of the standing committee on classical languages would be held in New Delhi on August eight where a decision to give Kannada classical language status might be taken.
Talking to newspersons here, he said the committee had met thrice and a final decision would be taken on the issue on that day.
Asked about the reported remarks of Tamil Virtual University Vice-Chancellor Kulandaswamy against granting classical language status to Kannada, Dr Singh said the standing committee had no pressure from any corner against issuing classical status to Kannada.
The committee was constituted by the Union Home Ministry with representatives from Home, HRD and Culture departments, he said.
