DP Azad Academy celebrates 1983 WC victory

Chandigarh, Jun 25 (UNI) Desh Prem Azad Cricket Academy today celebrated India's historic 1983 World Cup victory by organising an exhibition match between Kapil Dev XI and Gavaskar XI and honouring outstanding cricketers, sports administrators and sports scribes at a function held at St Stephen's School here.

Chandigarh Hockey Association secretary Yash Vohra, Indian cricket selector Bhupinder Singh Senior, Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association Mohinder Singh, former Punjab wicketkeeper Arun Sharma, former Haryana Ranji player Rakesh Jolly, SAI cricket coach Manjit Singh, Sushil Kapoor and journalists Don Bannerjee (The Tribune), Balbir Singh (United News of India) were honoured for their valuable contributions.

Meanwhile, Kapil Dev XI defeated Gavanskar XI by eight wickets in the 20 overs each side match. The highlight of the match was a brilliant century (104, 12x4s, 3x6s) by Nayyar for Kapil XI who made 155 for 2 in 15 overs. Batting first Gavaksar XI had scored 153 for 7. Saurabh topscored with 31.
