Chandigarh, Jun 24: Six Congress MLAs today condemned the vilification and character assassination campaign launched against former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh by the Punjab government in the ''garb of false, frivolous and politically motivated cases'' against him.

In a joint statement here, they alleged that as the government could not arrest Capt Singh in the Ludhiana City Centre case, Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and his son, Sukhbir Badal were once again using the police machinery of the state to settle political scores. ''By indulging in slanderous propaganda against Capt Singh, the Badals have given vent to the venom that they hold against their political adversaries,'' the statement added.

The signatories to the statement include, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Sunil Jakhar , Kanwarjit Singh Brar, Rana K P Singh, Ajit Inder Singh Mofar and Om Prakash Soni.

The MLAs expressed dismay at what they termed as the total collapse of official machinery at the whims and fancies of the Chief Minister. They reiterated that on the issue of political vendetta unleashed in Punjab, all Congressmen were united and with Capt Singh.

They warned the Government to immediately withdraw all such cases that had been registered mischievously and maliciously against Capt Singh and restore the rule of law or else the Congress will resort to a long drawn democratic struggle in the state.

They challenged the government to refer the matter of disproportionate assets and ill gotten wealth of both, the Badal family as well as that of Capt Singh, to an independent commission of inquiry.
