Kochi, Jun 24 (UNI) Kerala Power Secretary L Radhakrishnan today stressed on the importance of reusing natural resources and looking into the environmental issues created by its irrational use.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day international conference on 'Cleaner Production and Energy Conservation' here, Mr Radhakrishnan said there was a need to shift from an energy-intensive manufacturing philosophy to service delivery, which could reduce energy intensity.
''The society needs to seriously look into the environmental issues of irrational use of natural resources, which cannot be offset by recycling as often advocated. Instead, we need to respect and reuse our resources whenever possible, so that it results in absolute reduction of energy and material,'' he noted.
The need of the hour was 'out of the box' solutions for energy conservation and its sustainability, he added.
Delivering the keynote address, State Planning Board Member P V Unnikrishnan presented the recent initiative of the Government, 'Total Energy Security Mission,' through which local administrations were empowered to assess the lifeline of energy needs and devise programmes acccording to the available resource base.
More than 100 delegates from NAM countries, including India, were participating in the workshop, jointly organised by the Centre for Science and Technology of NAM and Society of Energy Engineers and Managers.
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership based in Vienna and the Paris-based French Agency for Environment and Energy Management were supporting the event.
