Hisar, Jun 24 (UNI) A 45-year-old man, who was arrested by the Haryana Police from a village in this district today, died some time later allegedly by consuming poison in the police custody here.
Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) of Hisar district police had brought Uday Singh of village Panihar Chak to police station to investigate about recovery of a country pistol and one cartridge from him this morning.
Later in the day, police said Uday Singh cosumed poison and he was taken to hospital where he died.
''During investigation Uday Singh went to the toilet and there he consumed poison. We took him to a private hospital where he died. A pistol and a cartridge were recovered from him," DSP Pooran Chand said.
The deceased's brother Inder Singh, who is a retired SDM, however alleged that the illicit weapon was actually recovered from some other person but his brother was implicated in the case by the police.
Demanding a judicial enquiry into the custodial death, he said such a probe would reveal the truth. ''My brother was not a criminal." Questioning the police version, he asked if the police had already searched Uday Singh and allegedly recovered the pistol and cartridge from him, how could the poison be left in his pocket.
He alleged that his brother died due to police torture and the poison theory was concocted by the police to save their skin.
