Mumbai, Jun 23 (UNI) Senior BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya today demanded that Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sunil Tatkare resign from the ministry, with the State Health Laboratory declaring 96 per cent of the imported red wheat lying in godowns as ''unfit for human consumption''.
Of 124 samples submitted by various tehsildars and district collectorates, 119 were found to be unfit for human consumption. Of this, 116 samples were submitted to the State Health Laboratory from May 17-31, Mr Somaiya told reporters here.
He alleged that the Minister has asked to sell the rotten wheat lying in various government-owned godowns to the private traders.
In all, 40,000 tons of insect-infested imported wheat is lying in the godowns.
The BJP leader said with these latest findings of State Health Laboratory, Mr Tatkare should resign on moral grounds.
Mr Somaiya has also demanded an explanation from the Democratric Front government which, he alleged, wanted to sell this wheat to the bakery owners for the making of bread.
He has said this infected wheat should be destroyed immediately.
