Melbourne, June 23 : In a bizarre drunken driving case, an intoxicated man was spotted asleep in his motorised wheelchair on a north Queensland highway, causing much trouble for other motorists on the road.

Passing police found the 64-year-old man asleep in a turning lane on the Captain Cook Highway at Stratford north of Cairns on the morning of June 21.

It was alleged that his breath test indicated him to be six times the legal blood alcohol limit.

After noticing him slumped in the wheelchair, the police stopped to help and breathalysed him after he smelt. He allegedly blew .301, more than six times the legal limit.

After he came into his senses, he revealed that he was going 14km down the four-lane highway to meet a friend at Trinity Beach.

"We'll allege he placed himself in a very dangerous situation. People should be aware that drink-driving laws cover these kinds of vehicles, but also others like horses and bicycles," News.com.au quoted police spokesman Bob Waters, as saying.

The man will be tried on July 7 in the Cairns Magistrates Court.
